INTRODUCTION

This appendix provides a summary of the maintenance operations for the
I t authorizes categories of maintenance for
specific maintenance functions on repairable items and components and the
tools and equipment required to perform each function. This appendix may
be used as an aid in planning maintenance operations.
Maintenance Function

Maintenance functions will be limited to and defined as follows:
a. I n s p e c t . To determine the serviceability of an item by comparing
i t s physical, m e c h a n i c a l and/or electrical characteristics with established
standards through examination.
b. Test. T o verify serviceability and to detect incipient failure by
measuring the mechanical or electrical characteristics of an item and
c o m p a r i n g those characteristics with prescribed standards.
c . S e r v i c e . Operations required periodically to keep an item in proper
o p e r a t i n g condition, i.e., to clean (decontaminate), to preserve, to drain,
t o paint, or to replenish fuel, l u b r i c a n t s , hydraulic fluids, or compressed
a i r supplies.
d. Adjust.
T o maintain, within prescribed limits, by bringing into
p r o p e r or exact position, or by setting the operating characteristics to
the specified parameters.
e. A l i g n . To adjust specified variable elements of an item to bring
about optimum or desired performance.

counterpart.
